HAMBURG, Germany, 21 May 2012. Business jet designers at the Bombardier Aerospace Learjet Inc. segment in Wichita, Kan., needed cabin-management and in-flight entertainment (CMS and IFE) systems for the new Learjet 70 and Learjet 75 business jets. They found their solution from the Lufthansa Technik Innovation Business Unit in Hamburg, Germany.
Bombardier Learjet officials are choosing Lufthansa Technik as the supplier of the CMS and IFE systems for the six-passenger Learjet 70 and the eight-passenger Learjet 75 general aviation aircraft. The Lufthansa Technik Nice high-definition (HD) system is the basis for the Learjet 70 and 75 CMS and IFE systems, and also is the baseline CMS and IFE systems for the Bombardier Challenger 300 business jet and the Learjet 85 aircraft.
The Nice HD system for the Learjet 70 and Learjet 75 will include personal HD video at most seat locations via 7-inch pop-up HD displays. The CMS and IFE systems have USB, Apple, and HDMI interfaces to enable encoding and streaming on the aircraft's Ethernet network.
The Lufthansa Technik multifunction Nice HD media center includes a Blu-ray player with built-in media server storage and update software packages. The in-flight entertainment system on the Learjet 70 and 75 aircraft also includes an audio and video on demand server, wired and wireless Internet access, and a map server. One unit can host all applications and play back two applications simultaneously.
The Nice HD system is based on a wired and wireless high-bandwidth Ethernet network. A third-generation user interface combines a scroll-wheel with an corresponding animated touchscreen control is available. Nice HD users also are able to control cabin functions via a wireless application to the Apple iPhone or iPad.
The Nice HD offers several cabin equipment packages involving lighting and environmental control, satellite communications and TV, portable audio and video devices, or cameras. Lufthansa Technik developed the system with highly accelerated life test (HALT) and highly accelerated stress screen (HASS) testing.
The Nice HD system also meets legal requirements for streaming HD content with integrated Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Hollywood-approved encryption. DRM is a system for protecting copyrighted data by enabling secure distribution and preventing illegal use of the data.
