Wearable head-up display for EFVS commercial aircraft operations introduced by Elbit
HAIFA, Israel, 9 June 2014. Elbit Systems Ltd. in Haifa, Israel, is introducing the SKYLENS wearable head-up display (HUD) for enhanced flight vision system (EFVS) applications by commercial aircraft pilots flying anywhere in the world.
Packed in a lightweight device similar to a pair of sunglasses, SKYLENS is suitable for aircraft flight operations in daylight, at night, and in bad weather.
The system provides head-up information while minimizing the dependency on airport instrumentation, company officials say. Pilots wearing SKYLENS can take off and land in low-visibility conditions and in locations that non EVS-equipped aircraft could not access previously.
SKYLENS displays high-resolution symbology and video on a transparent visor, providing pilots with head-out capabilities.
The system provides a solution for retrofitting small cockpit airplanes and helicopters. The system, which is in advanced processes of airworthiness certification, is expected to enter into service by the end of 2016, Elbit officials say.
