CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center (USAF SMC) officials are ordering 300 additional Military Code (M-Code) global positioning system (GPS) receivers from Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Designed for fifth-generation aircraft, the receivers help navigate using modernized GPS signals, feature new capabilities offer jamming resistance, and are resistant to cyber threats, officials say.

“From advanced fifth-generation aircraft to ground and maritime applications, this technology meets the warfighters’ needs for reliable and secure GPS navigation for increased situational awareness,” says Troy Brunk, vice president and general manager, Communication, Navigation & Electronic Warfare Systems for Rockwell Collins.

Rockwell Collins M-Code receivers will enable the next generation of reliable and secure GPS navigation for military applications

M-Code not only enhances traditional GPS for military use, but coexists with existing signals without interfering with current or future civilian or military user equipment. It is also designed to be autonomous so users can calculate their positions solely using the M-Code signal compared to existing signals where more than one signal code is required. M-Code receivers can be applied to new and retrofitted platforms.

This order comes after the recent fulfillment of 770 receivers in support of the Military GPS User Equipment (MGUE) program. Rockwell Collins began work on the MGUE contract in 2012. The USAF SMC program enhances GPS capabilities for the warfighter where current signals may be unavailable. As part of the contract, the company developed, delivered, and aided in the transition to M-Code receivers.

The M-Code receiver operates using a more powerful signal, resistant to cyber threats.

“This order will help accelerate the rapid integration and fielding of M-Code,” adds Rob Scott, director, Navigation Solutions for Rockwell Collins. “The delivery of our high-performing M-Code GPS receivers will enable the next generation of reliable and secure military navigation.”

The next major development milestone for Rockwell Collins’ M-Code receivers is the expected 2018 completion of the Global Positioning Systems Directorate (GPS-D) security certification. Completion of certification will expedite broader testing of the M-Code receivers in more platforms and locations.
